Swimming with the Sharks

If the idea of sharing the same space as massive, barrel-chested, uncaged and unsedated bull and tiger sharks turns you on, you’re in luck. This adrenalin-raising pursuit takes place in the Beqa Lagoon (near Pacific Harbour) in an area called Shark Reef Marine Reserve, a sanctuary dedicated to the protection of the species.

Led by an instructor, who has a bag of bloodied meat at the ready, divers watch as he hand-feeds an array of sharks including aggressive bulls, the occasional tiger shark, tawny nurse sharks, silvertip sharks and a variety of reef sharks such as black tip, white tip and grey.

Maori wrasse, giant groupers and eagle rays – along with a plethora of sea life – turn up for the show.

River Rafting

Grab your life jacket, helmet, and paddle, and set out for a short trek through the greenery to your put-in point near Nabukelevu Village. Hop aboard your inflatable raft and set off downstream.

The Upper Navua winds between steep, 130-foot cliffs of dark lava rock, fringed by leafy ferns and lush plant life. Drift through this serene setting, passing dozens of cascading waterfalls and the narrow slits of side canyons, and watch for native wildlife like elegant herons and brightly colored parrots.

Don’t get too relaxed, though—the river gets a bit more rough-and-tumble before long. Time to plunge your paddle into the churning waters. The Class II and Class III rapids offer a thrilling ride for novice and experienced paddlers alike. In a stretch of calm water, steer your boat toward the base of a waterfall, and then find a quiet spot to enjoy a riverside picnic.
